Lessons from a Traffic Jam

October 7th, 2008 by Bill Baren

It was Saturday night so I knew there was a good chance I’ll hit traffic on my way from Oakland to San Francisco.  And there was traffic but I didn’t have to get stuck in it.  And no, I wasn’t in a helicopter and no, I didn’t drive on the shoulder.

The reason I drove past hundreds of cars stuck in traffic to get on the Bay Bridge was that I had a Fastrak payment system.  Having Fastrak allowed me to get past all the waiting cars and simply drive through the toll booth without stopping.  The Fastrak lanes were empty, while the cash pay lines were severely backed up.

All I had to do is invest 5 minutes of my time registering for Fastrak and it has since saved me countless hours of waiting in traffic and paying with cash at the toll booth.

This got me thinking how often we don’t invest a little of our time upfront to save much more time later.

Some examples of this are:

•    Hiring and training somebody today to take care of the tasks that aren’t your strength or you don’t want to do
•    Spending time creating your email system

Where can you save time in the long run by investing some time on it today? Let us know…

I have fastrak, too, and it is the best thing I’ve done, driving-wise! Definitely a time and sanity saver.

Love the Fastrak! And love the analogy, too. Small actions can lead to big results.
